How does LATISSE™ work?

LATISSE™ works by affecting the growth of eyelash hairs by increasing the length as well as the number of hairs in the growth cycle.

LATISSETM is believed to affect the growth (anagen) phase of the eyelash hair cycle in 2 ways: first, it increases the length of this phase; and second, it increases the number of hairs in this growth phase.

Eyelash growth is a known side effect of Lumigan, a drug used in the treatment of glaucoma. LATISSE™ contains bimatoprost, the active ingredient in Lumigan. Lumigan and LATISSE™ are used differently, however. Lumigan drops are applied to the eyes, and LATISSE™ is dabbed along the lash line on the upper eyelids.

LATISSE™ is the only solution approved by the FDA for lash growth. Regular application of the product has been shown to result in the growth of thicker, fuller lashes, as well as an increased number of lashes, along the upper eyelid.

The actual mechanism behind the effectiveness of LATISSE™ is not known, but it is believed that the primary active ingredient of the product, called bimatoprost, helps encourage a longer, more productive lash growth cycle. The lash growth effects of bimatoprost were discovered by researchers during the development of another eye product. Once bimatoprost was identified as the cause of fuller, more lush lash development, the LATISSE™ solution was developed for market.

The LATISSE™ product is a medication available by prescription which you can apply yourself at home. Application begins with a thorough cleansing of your face, and removal or any and all makeup, cream or other products. Contact lenses must also be removed prior to application of LATISSE™. The solution is applied using a special applicator, which is provided with the prescription. Using the applicator, individuals place a drop of the formula at the base of the upper eyelid, where the eyelid surface and the base of the lashes meet. Excess solution should be blotted off with a tissue after application. Applicators are designed for a single use, and a new applicator should be used for each lid to avoid possible contamination. Although the solution is intended to be applied to the lid and not the eye itself, no harm will occur if a small amount of the LATISSE™ product enters the eye.

The product will only be effective if it is used on a regular and consistent basis. Individuals who interrupt or discontinue the treatment cycle will not achieve the same results as those who continue to apply the solution regularly.
